CORPUS CHRISTI - Texas A&M Corpus Christi are planning to build a new student apartment on campus.

University officials say the apartments are needed because of growing attendance rates.

Right now a recreational field near the university's baseball and softball facilities are used for running, soccer, and other recreational activities. But soon all that is going to change. The university plans to use that field to build new on campus apartments.

The new apartments will be built on 3.6 acres the university has leased to Camden Property Trust. Camden already operates apartments just next door that house 1,490 students.

Four new apartments will be built that will house 300 students.

Students we spoke with say living on campus has been convenient for them.

Melissa Beeler is a senior, who has lived on campus all four years. She says, "It's more flexible for you and your schedule to just go to the library in 5 minutes instead of driving around town."

Audrie Bermea is a freshman and says, "I can walk from here to class really fast."

University officials are also talking about making it mandatory for incoming freshman to stay on campus. They believe that students that live on campus have higher GPA and higher graduation rates.

But students, like Beeler, still have some concerns, "Where are they going to park with all these students living on campus. I hope they consider the parking issue."

Don't worry Beeler, the new apartments are also going to have two new parking lots, so hopefully parking won't be an issue.

The university is hoping to have the first phase of the project done by fall 2013.

All four buildings are expected to be finished by fall 2014.
