AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A Central Texas jury is to hear opening statements in the capital murder trial of a 26-year-old former software engineer charged with fatally shooting an Austin police officer in 2012.
The Travis County jury of 10 women and two men will hear statements Tuesday in Austin in the trial of Brandon Daniel. He could get the death penalty if convicted of the slaying of Officer Jaime Padron.
Daniel has pleaded innocent to charges. His attorneys had offered a guilty plea in exchange for a sentence of life imprisonment without parole, but prosecutors rejected the offer.
Authorities have said Padron was killed in a struggle with Daniel at a Walmart store after responding to a shoplifting call there.
