CORPUS CHRISTI -- A trial started Wednesday afternoon, for a man accused of shooting his brother-in-law in December of 2011. Bradley Fikes, 42 was charged with murder after he told investigators he shot Robert "Nick" Welch in the eye after an argument got out of control.

The shooting happened at a trailer park on F.M. 666 near Bluntzer. Prosecutors called their first witness, Darla Fikes to the stand. She is the victim's step sister and the defendant's sister-in-law. She testified before the court about the loss of her brother and the burden this put on the whole family.

"All I was thinking is that my brother was laying somewhere, I didn't know where, I didn't know for sure if he was alive or dead," Darla said.

She shed tears while she testified about the incident and says it was Fike's girlfriend Laurie who came to tell her about what happened.

"Who did Brad shoot and she wouldn't answer me and I asked her was it my f-ing brother and she looked at me and went yeah," Darla said.

Darla says Laurie didn't seem concerned about Nick but he was all she could think about.

"All I could think is that I needed to go find my brother," Darla said.

Darla says she jumped in her jeep and went to the trailer park where Brad and Nick both lived in neighboring trailers, she says that's when she saw her brother's lifeless body.

"He was slumped over like a baby when they sleep he had his hands like underneath him and his arm behind him like this and he was like that and he had no shirt on," Darla said.

Darla says she had dialed 911 on the drive over and stayed with Nick until her husband took her away from him.

"I rubbed him and patted him and touched his face, told him I loved him and I didn't know if he was still alive or if he was gone, I didn't know, I couldn't see him breathing," Darla said.

Testimony continues Thursday morning. Darla is expected to testify on behalf of Fikes as well.

If found guilty, Fikes could face life behind bars.
