GEORGIA - An 18-year-old Georgia man turned himself in Friday after being charged with stealing thousands that was mistakenly deposited into his bank account.
According to a release from the Madison County Sheriff, Steven Fields withdrew or made purchases totaling nearly $25,000 after a bank teller mistakenly deposited $31,000 into his account.
The money was actually for an account of another man with the same name.
Fields made several ATM withdrawals and made purchases at a car dealer, big box retailer, grocery store and fast food restaurant before the bank realized the error.
The bank tried to make arrangements with Fields to repay the money, but when he couldn't, the bank pressed charges.
Fields bonded out of Madison County Jail.
Stacey Sorrow, who said she's like a mother to Fields, believes that the bank teller is the one who should have to pay back the money. She said Fields will hire an attorney and fight the charges.
