TAMUK Volleyball Win Streak Snapped By Lady Buffs

KINGSVILLE - The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team had its winning streak snapped at three in Saturday's match with 7th-ranked West Texas A&M. The Lady Buffs handed Kingsville a 25-12, 25-21, 25-13 loss on Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

The loss drops the Javelinas to 3-6 in the Lone Star and 9-8 overall. They had swept their previous three opponents. The Lady Buffs improved to16-2 and 7-1.

Kingsville led early in the opening set at 6-3 but the Lady Buffs, who had a late night due to a fire in the engine on their bus, awoke and went on a 17-2 run to take a 20-8 lead. West Texas hit .522 in the set.

In the second set, the Javelinas picked up their play hitting .226 in the set after hitting .192 in the opening game, but could not get over the hump to take the set. Kingsville never led in the set but battled back multiple times from three and four points down to pull within a point at 22-21 after kills by Bethany Friesenhahn and Brown. The Lady Buffs won the next three points two on Javelina attacking errors to lead 2-0.

The final set was again close early on with the teams tied at 6-6, but Kingsville struggled to keep up hitting just .026 in the set.

Kelsey Washington had a match-high 12 kills for the Javelinas and was second with seven digs. Ali Insell led the team with nine digs. B Sarah Fountain had 23 assists for TAMUK, which hit .135 in the match.

Hallie Horton had 14 kills for the Lady Buffs, while Lady Hayes added 35 assists. Stormi Lancaster and Lauren Beville had 14 and 10 digs respectively. West Texas also finished with nine blocks led by Erin Dougherty and Lacy Hayes. Each had a solo block, while Dougherty had six blocks assists and Hayes five.

The Javelinas step out of conference action on Tuesday as they travel to Texas-Pan American at 6:30 p.m.. They visit Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday at 5 p.m. and face Texas Woman's at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
