CORPUS CHRISTI - Jade Davis, who helped lead the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team to a 2-0 start and its first-ever victory over an SEC opponent, was named the Southland Conference Player of the Week on Monday afternoon. It is the first award of the season and is also Davis' first Player of the Week honor in her career.
Davis scored 29 points in the Islanders 96-90 overtime comeback victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday, giving the team just its fourth win ever over an opponent from a BCS conference as well as the team championship at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Tip-Off Tournament.
In addition to the win over Alabama, the Islanders beat Air Force to begin 2-0 for the first time since the 2004-05 season. Davis averaged 19.5 points in the two games while adding eight assists, four rebounds and one steal. She was 6-12 from behind the three-point line this weekend with a 5-7 performance against the Tide.
The Islanders will look to improve their record to 3-0 when the travel to Houston this coming Saturday, Nov. 21 to take on Texas Southern. The game is set for a 2 PM start.
