CORPUS CHRISTI - With the volleyball playoffs about 24 hours away, there probably isn't a team more excited to get started than the Tuloso-Midway Cherokees.
The Cherokees are in the postseason for the first time ever.
Head Coach Melinda Horton never missed the playoffs while coaching the King Lady Mustangs. She started the program there in the mid 90s and King's been a playoff fixture ever since. However, this one is special for her and her new team, that's playing just the second year of varsity ball at Tuloso-Midway. Fourth place in district has never felt so good.
"When you sit out that one year and you're not a part of the excitement and the continuation of the season, you definitely miss it. When you get it back, it's something you don't ever want to let go. You want to keep it as long as you can and keep the kids going on a tradition," Horton said.
"Just the last couple of games the playoffs has been in our minds and now it's here and it's real. So, we're ready," senior Jessica O'Connell said.
The Cherokees get started Tuesday in Alice at 7 p.m. against the Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets, a district champion.
