CORPUS CHRISTI - Two suspected car thieves are caught in the act after police say their ride ran out of gas.
Around one o'clock this afternoon, a Corpus Christi police officer noticed a maroon Chevy Cobalt sitting in the median near Weber and S. Padre Island Drive.
The hazard lights were on, so he asked the people inside if they needed help. It turns out, the two juveniles inside ran out of gas. The officer was nice enough to give them a ride to the nearest gas station.
Before they got there, the officer realized the car they were in was reported stolen.
According to police, Deonte Jones, 18, had the keys to the stolen car in his pocket. He's charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle. He just got out of jail following an arrest on Tuesday for allegedly stealing clothes at the Walmart in Flour Bluff.
One of Jones' companions, 20-year-old Brittney Mason, was arrested on an outstanding charge for theft of a vehicle. There's no word on the status of the teenage girl also involved in the case.
