Suspect in Texas Police Shooting Confirmed Dead

LA JOYA, Texas - The search for a murder suspect with ties to the coastal bend ended in a hail of gunfire last night in the Rio Grande Valley town of La Joya.

Joaquin Cibrian died in a shootout that also left two Edinburgh police officers wounded.

Police there had been looking the former Alice resident since last week in connection with a murder.

They tracked him down to that home but authorities say he barricaded himself and started shooting. Two officers were hit and six others were caught in the crossfire.

All were rescued and are expected to be okay.

The standoff ended last night when officers rammed the front door and tossed in tear gas.

Cibrian is believed to have been killed during that assault.

The bomb squad had to be called in to clear the house of booby traps believed to have been set up by Cibrian.

Cibrian had a lengthy criminal history including arrests here in the coastal bend. He was charged with theft last September and was accused in 2004 of attacking an elderly woman in the Del Mar neighborhood.
