CORPUS CHRISTI - A welding teacher at Beeville's A.C. Jones High School died from a stroke just over a week ago. Today, his students honored him during a welding competition.

Students with A.C. Jones competed proud and hard at the Nueces County Junior Livestock Show Welding Competition to honor a man they all say made a huge influence in their lives.

"He was a big role model to me and he taught me a lot," said Senior Maverick Quintena.

That man was Mike Mylnar. He died January second of a stroke., and his funeral was just yesterday.

This was the first competition the group has had to compete in without Mr. Mylnar. So to keep a little bit of him with them, they wore a special shirt in dedication to their beloved teacher. On it is said "Mylnar's Boys" and "we went in 'boys' and left as MEN."

"He meant a lot. He was like a father, a best friend, but he was our welding instructor at the same time," said Senior Bryan Webb.

And while students say he was primarily their welding teacher, they tell me he taught them so much more.

"He gave us skills we can take on to life. Um, how to be a Godly man, how to work in the world, how to work with other people, and just give it your best no matter what you do," said Webb.

"He kept me out of trouble and he taught me how to weld, and he taught me lots of things to stay out of trouble," said Quintena.

Many of his students say it was because of him that they graduated and went on to do bigger and better things with their lives.

"He was a great man and will be missed dearly, but his legacy will live on," said Webb.

And by the way, in the competition today, they won first place.
