CORPUS CHRISTI -- More than 500 cemeteries -- around the country and here in Corpus Christi -- participated in "Wreaths Across America."
The event is held to honor our veterans over the holidays.
Volunteers pulled out dozens of Christmas wreaths from boxes at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery today.
Ben Bolt Middle School student Teresa Dalvi said, "Everybody deserves a Christmas whether dead or alive and we thought it was an important thing to do especially since they served our country for us."
Adults organized the local "Wreaths Across America" event but they credit the kids for making it happen.
Cecilia Beavers said, "It fills me with pride for my country and just to be part of it."
Kids from Ben Bolt Middle School and Tuloso Midway Independent School Districts helped to raise money -- through different fundraisers like bake sales -- to make sure each veteran in this cemetery received a wreath.
Before the wreath laying the Veterans Band played patriotic music and there was a moment of silence for the victims killed in the Connecticut shootings.
After the ceremony, family members collected wreaths to lay at their loved ones graves.
Volunteers also helped to decorate the cemetery with the beautiful wreaths.
Ben Bolt Middle School student J.W. Swisher said, "All these veterans around us are probably smiling saying this is the youth of America. These people can take my place when I'm gone and fight for America's freedom."
Wreaths Across America began in 1992 at Arlington National Cemetery.
