CORPUS CHRISTI - One thing Corpus Christi does seem to have more than it's fair share of is stray animals. In fact some officials say our county has some of the highest numbers in all of the United States.

After taking a drive around Corpus Christi, I saw stray dogs and cats wondering the streets. But I wasn't the only one to notice this problem.

David Martin says, "It's a shame and it's a real problem. But people do let their dogs just run around and that makes more dogs and they don't take care of them."

Martin lives near City Hall, and says he even has two strays living under his home.

While Martin and I were talking, three stray dogs crossed a road behind us, and Martin says the problem gets worse. He sees at least 10 strays a day, and most of them don't have a happy ending.

Martin says, "Most of them don't last very long. They get run over."

Peewee's is a local non profit animal shelter. The director Ernie Cochran says that with around 200 cats and dogs they can't handle any more animals. But they still get anywhere between 40 to 75 calls a day. And some of these calls aren't very nice

When I asked Cochran about these calls she says, "People say, this is your job. You're supposed to take them in. They call me four letter words if I don't take their animal."

Then Cochran shared this piece of information, "This is the second worst county for animal neglect in the United States."

Animal control officers didn't know if that was true, but they did tell me they get 45 to 50 calls a day about animals wandering the street.

Both Animal Control and Peewee's agree that there is only one solution to this problem, people taking responsibility for their pets.

Cochran couldn't reinforce it enough, "Spay and neuter, spay and neuter, spay and neuter."

If you do want to help out with the stray animals, there is a pet adoption at Animal Control at the 2500 block of Holly this Saturday. All adoptions are free.
