CORPUS CHRISTI -- An incident of stranger danger happened near Cunningham Middle School this afternoon.

A 12-year-old student says he had a frightening encounter just blocks from his home.

The boy's mom talked to us about her son's frightening encounter because she feels all parents need to know this can happen to anyone.

Her son was walking home from school, in fact it's the first time he's done that.

He left Cunningham Middle School and walked along Hudson near the old Chula Vista Academy just before 4:30 this afternoon when a stranger approached him.

12-year-old David Michael Ortiz says he was just two minutes from his home when he noticed a brownish car with no hub caps roll up slowly on Hudson.

When the car pulled up to him he started getting a feeling that something was very wrong.

David said, "And then he rolled down the window and said 'Hey come here.' And I turned around and said 'What?' While I turned around I started walking faster and he like in a more angrier, violent voice, he said 'Come here!' and that's when I knew that's when something was probably going to happen so I just took off running and then that's when he rolled his window up and took off."

His mom Heather Echols-Lopez said, "He's telling me someone just tried to take him and that's every parents worse nightmare right there. You never want something like that to happen or for your child to even come home and tell you that happened so it's very scary and all I can do is thank God that he did the right thing and he took off, he hauled butt home."

David didn't get a very good look at the guy.

But, his mom called police and filed a report.

Tomorrow she plans to let officials -- at her son's school -- know about what happened today.

She's confident this man will be caught and says parents should learn from incidents like this...because ultimately they're the ones who need to step up and protect their kids.
