WOODSBORO - The City of Woodsboro has too much arsenic in its water. That's according to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. We reported this problem over a year ago, and again several months ago.
Now, the T.C.E.Q is saying the city still isn't staying under the Environmental Protection Agency requirements for arsenic levels in their water.
In 2006, the E.P.A lowered the amount of permissible arsenic that can be in water from 14 parts per billion to 10 parts per billion.
Since then, T.C.E.Q says Woodsboro has 21 violations for having too much arsenic in their water.
Now, residents are getting yet another letter saying the arsenic levels are too high.
Christine Coots has lived in Woodsboro for 7 years and says she's been routinely getting those letters during the whole time she's lived there.
"I don't trust the water. Most of the people around here don't trust the water. Everybody I know buys bottled water," Coots says.
The city has been trying to lower the arsenic levels by blending the water from three different wells. Then, they send the water through a filtration system.
According to T.C.E.Q, the city's most recent test actually shows them under the limit, at 9.7 parts per billion. But the state uses the average of all tests in a year to make their measurement, and Woodsboro's average is too high.
Kyle Morgan is a long time resident of Woodsboro, and says even with recent improvements, 7 years of experience tell him it might not last.
"About the time you think okay they'll get it this time, we get another letter," Morgan says.
The city believes their average arsenic level will drop below the E.P.A limit the next time T.C.E.Q tests their water. They say that test will happen in roughly two weeks.
