CORPUS CHRISTI - Once again Staples Street construction is being blamed for hurting a business.
The owner of Sashay Boutique says she was forced to shut her doors last week and move from Staples and Holly to a new location.
Back in March, Desiree De La Paz told us that if the road construction outside her store got too bad, she might have to move. 9 months later she did just that.
De La Paz says, "A lot of customers were complaining about coming in and out of our location and there was a little fender bender. There was a few actually in front of our store."
With Stapes Street reduced to one lane, De La Paz says there was a big increase in traffic. She says the city told her construction would mostly be done at night, but 18-wheelers blocked the entrance to her shop during business hours. And on top of all of that, with the sidewalks closed, there was a decrease in foot traffic.
In August she knew something had to be done when sales were down 40% from the previous year, " I had to cut my staff in half. That was one thing. So I was doing twice the amount of work."
But that wasn't even enough, "it's like seeing your child have something wrong. Like you're trying everything you can do, but there is nothing that will work."
So she knew it was time to move. Breaking her lease cost her even more money, but to keep her business alive, it was her only option.
De La Paz says, "A lot of time and money was wasted because of the construction. You have to also incur the moving sales and build out also."
De La Paz opened her doors today in the Town and Country Shopping Center.
She hopes that with the new location away from the Staples Street construction, sales will go back up.
Although Sashay Boutique did open up today, De La Paz will have a grand opening at the Town and Country Center on December 22.
There will be live music and a fashion show. The business will also be collecting toys for the Toys for Tots campaign. If you bring a toy you get 25% off your purchase.
