CORPUS CHRISTI - On May 16th, Corpus Christi will enter stage 3 water restrictions. That means watering with sprinklers will only be allowed on the day of your recycling pickup.
City officials decided to move forward with stage 3 restrictions even though the lake levels are at 34% capacity. People will have a 2 week grace period, after that, you could be hit with a fine up to $500.
The city is also seriously looking at the idea of a desalination plant.
"We've applied for a $400,000 grant to simply start a the demonstration.. to do a pilot for salt water and brackish water desalination. That's on a small scale of looking in the science and technology and chemistry of what it would cost for a full scale model or size,"says Gus Gonzalez of the city water department.
The cost is a concern since a saltwater plant would cost $2.5 million more than the Mary Rhodes pipeline.
