FRISCO - George Springer hit a ball out of the stadium at Dr Pepper Ballpark and Rene Garcia had three hits to help Corpus Christi to a 6-3 win over Frisco Sunday afternoon in front of 6,268 fans.
The Hooks staked starting pitcher David Martinez to an early lead. Enrique Hernandez led off the game with a double and scored on Jonathan Meyer's two-bagger. Hernandez hit in the lead-off spot for the first time this season in three of the four games at Frisco and reached base in eight of his 15 plate appearances.
Corpus Christi (3-3, 45-31) scored twice more in the third inning on George Springer's mammoth two-run home run to left field. Springer jumped on a Carlos Pimentel fastball and crushed it over the street beyond the fence and halfway to the Dr Pepper Starcenter. It was Springer's 19th home run of the season and his first in 13 games.
Martinez allowed a lead-off home run to Frisco catcher Zach Zaneski in the bottom of the third, but escaped the inning without further damage. Martinez and Mike Foltynewicz were scheduled to throw just 40 pitches each due to the Texas League All-Star Game Tuesday.
Three errors by the Frisco (3-3, 42-34) defense, the best in the Texas League, helped the Hooks to three runs over the fourth and fifth innings. Rene Garcia drove in a run in the fourth, while Raoul Torrez plated one with a double in the seventh. He later came into score on a miscue to give the Hooks a 6-1 lead.
Pimentel (7-5) was chased from the game during the Hooks' fifth inning, after he allowed five runs, four earned runs, in four and one-third innings.
Foltynewicz (3-0) started the fourth inning for the Hooks and allowed a run in the fifth. Odubel Herrera walked to lead off, went to third on an error and scored on Alejandro Selen's base hit to make it a 6-2 game. Foltynewicz allowed one earned on five hits in three innings pitched and received some help from a Hooks defense that turned four double plays on the afternoon.
Frisco added one run in the eighth inning on Chih-Hsien Chiang's solo home run off Andrew Robinson to bring the RoughRiders within three. Patrick Urckfitz recorded the final four outs for Corpus Christi to nail down the save for a second consecutive night.
The Texas League All-Star Game is Tuesday night in Springdale, AR, home of the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Jake Buchanan, Mike Foltynewicz, Rene Garcia, David Martinez and George Springer will represent the Hooks in the six o'clock game.
The team opens a six-game homestand Wednesday at 7:05 PM against the Springfield Cardinals. Richard Castillo (5-3) will take the ball for Springfield against Corpus Christi's Ruben Alaniz (3-7).
