FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) Gov. Steve Beshear has scheduled a Feb. 2 special election to fill the unexpired term of former state Rep. Jimmy Higdon who resigned earlier this month after being elected to the state Senate.
Republican and Democratic executive committees will meet in coming days to choose the nominees. At least four Lebanon residents are being touted as contenders for the seat that represents Marion, Casey and a portion of Pulaski counties.
Car dealer Bill Pickerill and state employee Leo Johnson are being considered for the GOP nomination. Dairy farmer Joe Paul Mattingly and Social Security Administration retiree Terry Mills are being considered for the Democratic nomination.
Beshear issued an order on Monday setting the date for the special election.
Higdon, a Lebanon grocer, had held the seat since 2003.
