Some Small Businesses Pass on Cyber Monday Madness

CORPUS CHRISTI - It's supposed to be the next big thing. Cyber Monday is the pot of gold at the end of the retail rainbow that peaks each year on Black Friday.

And the numbers bear it out: the National Retail Federation estimates more than 130 million American shoppers will surf and shop on Cyber Monday.

But despite the promise of more sales, some small coastal bend businesses are skipping out.

They say that online shopping sites are both risky and expensive and leave out the one thing many customers still value: speaking with a real, live human being.

It's part of the holiday shopping experience that some say is going by the wayside.

"We like to think that we have that personal interaction with you so if there is something wrong with the merchandise we sell you you can bring it back," said Dennis Moynihan at Bay Area Bicycles. "We'll fix it, we'll warranty it - we'll do what we gotta do to make you happy."

The Four Chicks Boutique in Lamar Park has a website but they don't sell anything from it.

Their site is meant to do one thing: get people into the store for the personal touch people don't get buying online.

"I don't know everything about evrything in this store but I definitely try my hardest to make sure my customer knows more than I do," said Morgan Vassaur, a sales associate at Four Chicks.

She said online shopping makes sense for larger retailers that can maintain complex, online web sites and stock the inventory needed to support them.

But at Four Chicks, only one or two of each item are on hand, leaving very little wiggle room.

Moynihan said the bicycle store caters to walk in customers who value knowledgeable sales people and personal service.

"And, in our own opinion, that builds a community business and that's why we're here. We want to help the community."
