Softball Tops SFA, Falls to Texas State on Final Day of CenturyLink Classic

SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team split a doubleheader today in the final day of the CenturyLink Classic at Bobcat Stadium. The Islanders topped Southland foe Stephen F. Austin 5-2 before falling 13-0 to Texas State in five innings.

The Islanders (1-3) will now trek to Las Cruces, N.M. to compete in the Troy Cox Classic starting on Feb. 14. Northern Colorado, Texas Tech, Weber State and host New Mexico State are all on tap to compete.

GAME 1: Texas A&M - Corpus Christi 5, Stephen F. Austin 2

A huge opening frame and strong bats powered the Islanders to their first victory of the season 5-2 over Stephen F. Austin (0-3) in the first of two games today. Mickayla Cochran went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs to help the Islanders outhit the Ladyjacks 12-5.

Seniors Valerie Perez and J.J. Jackson along with sophomore Dani Tefft chipped in a pair of hits, while Mackinzee Griebel, Brittney Morse, Michelle Sorenson and Hayley Galloway all added one apiece.

Griebel starting things off with a single to shortstop and scored on Cochran's inside-the-park home run to left field. Morse kept things rolling with her third home run of the season with a blast over the right field wall.

Freshman Liz Carter held the Ladyjacks off the board through the first three innings and retired 10 straight before a four-hit bottom of the fourth put SFA on the board. With one out, Taylor Vick registered the Ladyjacks their first hit of the game and Preseason First Team All-Conference player Elizabeth Arana hit a single to first base. The Ladyjacks followed with two more singles to plate a pair of runs before the Islanders escaped with two fly outs.

The Islanders' bats kept rolling into the top of the seventh with four hits and two runs. Cochran led the frame off with a single to second base and Sorenson drilled a RBI double to left field to score Cochran. After a fly out by Lindsey Lyles, Perez cranked a RBI double to right center to score Sorenson and pad the Islanders' lead to 5-2.

Carter (1-1) retired the next three in the bottom of the seventh to earn the victory. The freshman picked up the victory for the Islanders in the circle in her second career start. The freshman allowed just five hits, two runs and didn't allow a walk in seven innings. Carter also tallied two strikeouts while facing 26 Ladyjacks.

Lewis (0-1) took the loss for SFA after giving up five hits and three runs while walking one.

GAME 2: Texas State 13, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi 0 - 5 innings

Texas State (3-1) jumped out early in the opening frame with three runs on three hits to take an early lead. After a one-out walk, Jordan Masek tripled to right field to plate Timishia North for the first run of the game. Kendall Wiley then followed with a two-run home run over the right center wall to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.

Griebel led the Islanders' bats off with an infield single, but was caught stealing and the Bobcats escaped the inning with a strikeout and ground out.

Texas State added a pair of runs in the top of the second on two hits to take a 5-0 lead. Kelli Baker hit a one-out double to right field to score Katie Doerre who reached on a walk. Baker then plated the Bobcats' fifth run of the game on a Masek RBI single to right field.

Jackson posted the Islanders second hit of the game in the bottom of the second. The senior ripped a long single to the high part of the wall in right center with one out, but the Bobcats pulled out of the frame with a strikeout and pop fly.

The Bobcats added seven more runs in the top of the fourth on seven hits and one Islander fielding error. Texas State posted another run in the top of the fifth on three hits to cap the scoring.

Griebel, Perez, Jackson and Laura Phillips all collected one hit apiece for the Islanders.

Katie Blanar (0-1) took the loss for the Islanders in her first career start in the circle. The freshman allowed 16 hits, 13 runs while walking four and striking out three in fiving innings.

Rayn House (2-0) sealed the win for the Bobcats. She allowed four hits and one walk while striking out seven batters in five innings.
