LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team dropped a pair of losses today on the second day of play in the Troy Cox Classic at NMSU Softball Complex. The Islanders fell short 2-1 to Texas Tech earlier today before falling 5-2 to Weber State.
For the second straight day Dani Tefft propelled the Islanders' offense. The sophomore went 3-for-5 and is now 7-for-11 in the classic, which is good for a .636 batting average.
The Islanders (2-6) will conclude play in New Mexico Sunday at 9 a.m. MST against Iowa State.

GAME 1: TEXAS TECH 2, TEXAS A&M - CORPUS CHRISTI 1
A&M - Corpus Christi jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but a costly error in the fourth and a bases loaded walk in the fifth lifted the Red Raiders to a 2-1 victory over the Islanders.
Tefft and Valerie Perez each went 2-for-3 to lead the Islanders' bats while Mickayla Cochran and Lindsey Lyles each collected one hit apiece. The Red Raiders outhit the Islanders 9-6.
The Islanders' bats got hot in the top of the second with two hits and into the third to take a 1-0 lead. Tefft led the inning with her fifth hit of the weekend with a single to right field. Mackinzee Griebel then stepped to the plate and registered the sacrifice bunt to move Tefft to second. Cochran followed with a hit by pitch before Brittney Morse's fielder's choice to shortstop sent Cochran to second. Perez then drilled an RBI single to center field to score Cochran and put the Islanders on the board.
The Red Raiders evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Cassie McClure hit a leadoff double to right field before scoring on a stolen base to third and a throwing error by the Islanders.
Texas Tech added another run in the bottom of the fifth to push ahead 2-1. Samantha Camello started things off with a single to left field. She then advanced to second on a walk before landing on third on Kristi Belshi's single. With no outs and the bases loaded, Lea Hopson walked to score Camello and put the Red Raiders in front. The Islanders escaped the bases loaded jam as Carter tallied back-to-back strikeouts and Lyles recorded the third out of the inning at third.
Carter (2-2) recorded a career-high six strikeouts in the loss. The freshman allowed nine hits, two runs and walked three in six innings.
Brittany Talley (3-0) secured the victory for Texas Tech. She allowed five hits, one run while striking out three in five innings. Gretchen Aucoin earned the save in two innings. She limited the Islanders to one hit and one walk while recording three strikeouts.
GAME 2: WEBER STATE 5, TEXAS A&M - CORPUS CHRISTI 2
The Islanders fell behind early 3-0 and Weber State's MaCauley Flint gave up just one earned run to lead her team to a 5-2 victory. Griebel and Tefft went 1-for-2 and Cochran, Jackson and Galloway notched one hit apiece to help the Islanders' offense.
Weber State posted the first run of the game in the bottom of the second on a pair of hits. After a fly out to Tefft in left field, Alyson Kulp reached on a bunt and advanced to second after Katelyn Robinson was hit by the pitch. After Mackenzi Corta poked an infield single, Kulp scored on a Malia Campos ground out. A fly out to Griebel in right field pulled the Islanders out of the frame leaving two stranded.
The Wildcats added two runs in the bottom of the fourth, and one in the fifth and sixth. Sara Hingsberger led things off in the fourth with a single through the left side and Kulp followed suit with a single to center field. With runners on first and second Katelyn Robinson hit an infield single to load the bases. With Kylee Hogue at the plate, the Islanders gave up a passed ball and Hingsberger scored for a 2-0 Weber State lead. The Wildcats added another run in the frame after Hogue walked, Campos reached on a fielder's choice and Rudi Barrios hit a sacrifice fly to Griebel in right field to score Robinson and extend the Wildcats' lead to 3-1.
Weber State tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth after a walk and a hit by pitch put runners on first and second for the Wildcats. Davis hit into a ground double play but Jasmine Ioane, who reached on a hit by pitch landed on second on the play. Hingsberger then reached on an Islanders' throwing error and Ioane scored for the Wildcats' fourth run of the game.
The Islanders' bats caught fire in the top of the sixth to plate two runs to pull within two. Michelle Sorenson jumpstarted the offense by reaching on an infield error and Tefft moved her to second on a single to left field. After a passed ball advanced Sorenson to third and Tefft to second, Griebel ripped a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Sorenson and put the Islanders' on the board. Cochran kept things going with her first double of the year with a dropper to right center to score Tefft and trim the Wildcats lead to two. However, Flint retired the next two Islanders to escape the inning.
Weber State answered back with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Corta walked to start the inning and Campos followed with an infield double to place runners on second and third. After Constance Brandenburg struck out the next Wildcat, Brooke Silva hit a RBI ground out to score Corta and tack on another run for Weber State. Perez pulled the Islanders out of the frame with a ground out.
Katie Blanar (0-2) took the loss for the Islanders in three innings. The freshman allowed six hits and three runs, while walking two. Brandenburg came in for relief and limited the Wildcats to just one hit and one earned run, while walking three and striking out one in three innings.
Flint (2-1) sealed the victory for the Wildcats. She allowed five hits and one earned run, while recording eight strikeouts in seven innings.
