Softball Clinches Series with 6-5 Victory over Bears on Senior Day

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team rallied in the third and held the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth to pick up their first Southland series win of the season with a 6-5 victory over Central Arkansas to wrap the season on Meagan McKinney's Senior Day at Chapman Field

The Islanders (11-39, 6-21 SLC) outhit the Bears (36-18, 15-10 SLC) 10-7 and were led by Mickayla Cochran who went 3-for-4 and Cassie Carroll who recorded two hits.

The Bears scored a run in the top of the second and two in the top of the third to take an early 3-0 lead. Melanie Bryant tripled to right center to lead off the top of the second and scored on a Lissa Avitia RBI sacrifice fly to left field. Central Arkansas tacked on two runs on two hits in the top of the third after Tiffany Roby reached on a walk and Sam Forrest followed with a single and scored on an Islanders' fielding error.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi rallied back in the bottom of the third with four runs on five hits to push ahead 4-3. Cochran ripped a single to third base before the Islanders drilled three consecutive doubles to score three runs. With two outs, Lindsey Lyles hit a RBI double to right field and scored Cochran before Valerie Perez followed suit with a RBI double to left center to plate Lyles. The Islanders' third run scored after McKinney cranked a RBI double to right field to score Perez. Carroll then brought McKinney around to score after hitting a RBI single to center field.

The Islanders padded their lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth with two runs on four hits. Carroll ripped a single through the right side and Laura Phillips blasted a RBI single to right center. With runners on the corners, Dani Tefft singled through the left side to score Carroll. Cochran then plated the Islanders final run of the day with a RBI double down the left field line.

The Bears battled back in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs. Melissa Bryant tripled to right field to score Sarah Bigej who reached on a walk. Melanie Bryant then scored her sister with a RBI sacrifice fly to left field, but it wasn't enough as the Islanders escaped with the victory.

Bethany Slick (3-6) picked up the victory for the Islanders. The sophomore allowed three hits and two runs while walking four and striking out one in four innings.

Kelsie Armstrong (28-12) took the loss for the Bears. She allowed 10 hits and six runs while walking one and striking out 10 in six innings.
