Smoke Alarms Help Save a Bishop Family's Life

BISHOP - Water dripped from the ceiling and parts of their floor were still smoldering several hours after fire broke out in the Perez's home.
their 4 kids were at school and father Edward Perez was asleep after just finishing his night shift.
"We heard the smoke alarm go off, right away we got up and and we came towards the kids room where we heard the fire alarm," says homeowner Vargie Perez.
But as soon as they opened the door, they saw that smoke already filled the room making it impossible to see. Once the smoke became overwhelming inside, they exited the home, ran out in front of their children's bedroom and opened up the windows behind me then used this hose to try and spray inside at any fire that may be lit.
"We tired to go back in and get a few things, but it was just so intense from the smoke. We couldn't see, we couldn't breathe, so we just came out," said Perez.
Fire crews from Bishop, Kingsville, and surrounding areas fought for an hour to put out the blaze, but the Perez's home for the last seven years was completely destroyed. While the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, the Perez children say they didn't leave anything on in their room that could have sparked the blaze. So now the family plans to look in to the wiring of the trailer which was made in the 70's.
"We have each other,we have our family, our friends, our community, and we are just going to move forward from here. There is no going back," said Perez.
Vargie and her husband say they are just thankful for the early warning their smoke alarms gave them.
