CORPUS CHRISTI - Police are searching the area around Fannin Elementary School in Corpus Christi after an attempted abduction this morning. Two sisters say they managed to get away from two men in a white van then hid in Cuiper Park waiting for police to arrive.
According to police, one sister kicked the would-be abductor before a neighborhood dog attacked. That's when the two men drove off allowing the girls to run and hide in the park near Ayers and Horne Road.
Neighbors tell us they heard the dog barking, but had no idea someone tried to abduct the girls, or else they would have taken action to protect the two.
The girls are sisters, 10 and 12 years old. Right now, police are interviewing them at the Child Advocacy Center.
They told officers the driver of the man had a tattoo on his wrist, the passenger who attempted the abduction, was wearing a ski mask. They say he had on a blue shirt and blue jeans.
The girls' mother decided to keep both home from school today.
We spoke briefly with her this morning, understandably, she's quite emotional over all this.
Obviously, everyone is greatful the girls are okay, but the principal at their school says she's not taking any chances. She plans to make an announcement to students at school today and send a letter home to parents about the incident.
"We want parents to take this time to really talk to their kids about stranger danger and about being careful about their surroundings," said Principal Debbie Scates.
Police have been patrolling the area all morning. They actually printed out a list of registered sex offenders in the neighborhood and went house to house off that list searching for the two men.
