ODEM - Family members of 32 year old Melinda Maldonado, from Taft, are mourning her sudden death after an SUV struck her on FM 77 Friday night.
"We were very close. It was just very, very heartbreaking when I heard the news."
Lisa Molina is still reeling from the tragic news that her younger sister, 32 year old Melinda Maldonado, was hit by an SUV on Highway 77.
"I just couldn't believe it because I had just seen her," Lisa said.
Lisa said she had just seen Melinda only a few hours before the accident.
Officers tell us Moldonado and her boyfriend got into an argument inside an Odem game room. They say Melinda's boyfriend then got into his car and drove off, leaving her stranded at the game room.
"Because of him, she is not here," Molina said.
Investigators say Melinda then crossed Highway 77 when the SUV hit her. She died at the scene. And though she is still coping with the loss of her sister, Lisa says she's also angry.
Lisa told us, "And he left. He left her there, you know? She was stranded, he left her there. He ran like a coward."
Melinda leaves behind 3 children, her oldest daughter Mariah, recalled how her mom used to make her smile.
"She was nice and she would make us laugh," Mariah said.
Now the kids will stay with their aunt, as they make arrangements to lay their loved one to rest.
The driver of the SUV that hit Maldonado didn't get a citation. Officers say they aren't sure why the victim was walking across the highway.
