CORPUS CHRISTI - The sound of bells usually fill shopping malls and stores during the holidays, but not this year. That's because the salvation army found itself with a shortage of volunteers. It's the sound that the holidays are here, Salvation Army bells ringing around town. But due to the dwindling number of volunteers this year, The Salvation Army of Corpus Christi fears it may be $20,000 $30,000 short of its 200,000 goal.

"The numbers aren't totally in so we aren't sure how short the numbers are going to fall, but we are hoping it's not too bad," said Valentin Garcia, a Case Manger at The Salvation Army of Corpus Christi.

The Salvation Army says it was 18 people short this year, but it can't say exactly why.
It's not just The Salvation Army of Corpus Christi that is seeing a shortage in its volunteers, but in fact they are seeing the shortage all across Texas and even in the big metropolitan cities.

For 22 year old Justin Chapman, this news was upsetting because he knows first hand how this money helps the community.

"My godparents have been ringing the bell for about 15 years, and The Salvation Army helped them out when ever she was in the hospital and lost her leg," said Chapman.

For the past six years he's rung his bell, knowing that his donated time helps others in need.

"Every little bit helps because it all adds up," said Chapman

As pennies and dollar bills fill his bucket, The Salvation Amy gets one step closer to making its goal. The Salvation Amy is working on ways to attract more volunteers for next year. If you want to contribute to the organization there's still time, click here to go to the website.
