CORPUS CHRISTI - The Nueces County Sheriff's Office says Judge Tom Greenwell left a handwritten last will and testament and made several phone calls before taking his own life in his office bathroom Monday.
A gun was also found near the judge's body, but it is not clear if the pistol belonged to him. Judges, prosecutors and law enforcement are allowed to carry firearms in the courthouse. By law, judges are considered peace officers and do not require a license to carry a firearm.
The Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy today.
A member of a cleaning crew found Judge Greenwell's body just before 7 p.m. on Monday on the 8th floor of the Nueces County Courthouse. By that time, everyone else at the courthouse had already gone home for the day.
It was fairly obvious who was still in the building as Greenwell's GMC truck was the only vehicle in the parking lot.
Campaign manager Al Hinojosa tells us he last spoke with Greenwell on Saturday while the judge was in the middle of a two week vacation.
It will now be up to Governor Rick Perry to fill the vacant bench of the 319th District Court. District Attorney Mark Skurka says cases scheduled for the court will be handled by other district judges or visiting judges.
if you have a case pending in the 319th District Court contact the 94th District Court, District Judge Bobby Galvan, for information. The court clerks number is 361-888-0320.
