MONTAGUE, Texas (AP) - A sheriff says the fatal shooting of a North Texas high school football player appears to have been accidental.
Montague County Sheriff Paul Cunningham says the death of 18-year-old Nathan Maki was "a tragic accident."
The 18-year-old senior fullback and linebacker for Denton Guyer High School was found with a gunshot wound to the head in a pickup truck Saturday night in a field close to Bowie, Texas. He died later at Bowie Memorial Hospital.
Cunningham said Maki, a 17-year-old boy were camping with two 18-year-old women and planned to do some dove hunting Sunday when the boy accidentally shot Cunningham. The girls fled, and the boy was arrested for underage possession of alcohol.
Denton Guyer won the Class 4A Division I state championship last season.
