CORPUS CHRISTI - Over the years I have met some busy kids, but Vanessa Johnson may just take the cake. Just a sophomore at A&M-Corpus Christi, the standout golfer has a one-year old daughter at home, but still manages to attend college full-time not mention playing college golf.

"I am very proud, I wouldn't trade this life for anything. I am proud to be an Islander and I really think this happened for a reason," said Johnson.

A Carroll graduate, she had a slue of college coaches drooling over her as her senior year began, but before she could make a decision Vanessa found out she was pregnant, she told me she figured her golfing career was finished.

"I thought it was over," she said.

But rather than quitting Johnson contacted Islander Head Coach Carol Blackmar.

"I asked her if I could join the team, she said yeah I will give ya a shot," she said.

She then made the most of her chance, quickly proving to be one of the best golfers on the team.

"All my teammates understand and they love my daughter so it's like she has seven moms," she said.

As for Johnson's day to day routine, she wakes up before the sun rises and then is on the go until well after midnight.

"Waking up at 6:30am and I am doing homework till 2 or 3 in the morning, sometimes I want to cry but I know why I am doing it," she said.

Her daughter Jada is now one-year old and full of energy. And while she wears mom out, Vanessa knows that everything she is doing is for her daughter and that's what keeps her going.

"I'm getting an education for me and for her and it's tough it's not easy but I am living my dream playing golf," She continued, "She is my world, I wouldn't change anything. I love everything about her and I am so blessed," said Johnson.

She told me that after college she hopes to be a trainer and would even like to open her own fitness studio. Johnson also made it a point to say that she doesn't condone teenage pregnancy, but for those who find themselves in the position, you can still follow your dreams.

"If you do have a baby at a young age you can still go on with your school and be successful with will and determination you can do anything you want you just have to believe," she said.
