CORPUS CHRISTI - Texas A&M - Corpus Christi's Jasmine Shaw was named the Southland Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced today. Shaw earned the award by averaging 27 points a game this week.
In her first game of the week Shaw set a career-high in field goals made with 11 en route to 28 points, which fell just one point shy of her career high. This effort helped her team to the victory against Incarnate Word, snapping a four-game losing streak on the road.
Shaw then followed that performance up with yet another game scoring 20 or more - her seventh of the season - as she exploded in the second half for 20 of her 26 points in a win against Abilene Christian.
The Cincinnati, Ohio, native was extremely proficient against the Wildcats, canning six of her seven three-point attempts to go along with an 8-for-12 overall performance from the field. During one vital stretch of the game, Shaw scored 13 points in just three minutes and 18 seconds of play.
The senior also made a huge play to seal the victory for the Islanders, as she pulled down the rebound off a missed free throw that would have tied the game with just three seconds left. She then hit both of her free throws to put the game away.
On the week Shaw also averaged four rebounds, three assists and one steal a game. She was also an incredible 19-for-30 from the field, including a 9-for-15 performance from behind the arc in the two games.
The team will be back in Corpus Christi this week after concluding a season-long four-game road trip. On Thursday, the Islanders will host their Pink Game, as they will take on UCA at 5 p.m. in the American Bank Center. This will be followed with a matchup against Oral Roberts on Saturday at 1 p.m. to close out this week's action.
