AUSTIN - Santa Gertrudis Academy Softball's best season in school history fell just short of a 2A State Championship. The Lady Lions were defeated, 1-0, in the title game by top-ranked Pilot Point.
The title game, played in front of a huge crowd at the University of Texas' McCombs field, lasted just over an hour and a half. The first five innings provided no runs, then things got interesting in the sixth. In the top half of the frame, SGA put runners on second and third with just one out. But after a strikeout and a popout to third, SGA remained scoreless. In the bottom of the frame, Pilot Point put runners on first and second with no outs. The Lady Lions' Celeste Castillo made a great play, snagging a line drive then doubling off the runner at first, for the double play. But the Lady Cats' next batter hit a double off the wall to drive in the game's only run.
SGA finished the season with a 39-5 record, and 2nd place in Class 2A.
