Seven-run Fifth Propels Hoggies Past ACU In Non-LSC Tilt

HOUSTON, Texas - The offense for Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth Monday afternoon as Javelinas downed Lone Star Conference foe Abilene Christian 8-5 in a non-conference meeting in the final game of the Astros In Action Division II Invitational at Minute Maid Park.

With the win, Kingsville finished the opening weekend tourney with a 3-1 mark. Abilene Christian dropped to 2-2.

In the decisive fifth inning, the Javelinas posted five hits to rally from a 2-1 deficit. With one away, Dustin Aguilar and Taylor Taska posted back-to-back singles. The duo came around to score on a double down the line in left by Chris Ballou. Clint Wallace, who scored the Hoggies opening run in the second inning, drove in Ballou with a double of his own off starter Austin Palmer(0-1), who left after the hit.

Reliever Nick Palacios promptly loaded the bases by hitting Trent Wanger with a pitch, and a walk to Matt Perez. Pinch hitter Joe Tallerine picked up an RBI the hard way as he was hit by a pitch with two away. After Ben Villafuerte drew a bases loaded walk, Aguilar lined his second single of the inning driving in a pair of runs for an 8-2 lead.

After scoring a run in the seventh, ACU cut further into the Javelina lead with a pair of unearned runs in the eighth off Taska. They would get no closer as Jeremy Flores combined with Denver Diefenbach for a scoreless inning of relief.

Matt Rhodes started for TAMUK going 4-2/3 innings he scatted four hits and walked five but limited the Wildcats to two runs. Taska (1-0) followed going 3-1/3 innings to earn the win. He permitted three runs with one earned on four hits. Flores recorded an out on the only batter he faced, while Diefenbach earned his first save by recording the final two outs.

Taska was also key at the plate leading the way with three hits for the Javelinas, while Aguilar added two. Villafuerte, Aguilar and Ballou each drove in a pair of runs.

The Hoggies return to the Coastal Bend this weekend when they host the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach South Texas Baseball Classic at Whataburger Field. They host St. Cloud State at 6 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, they play Southeastern Oklahoma State at 6, while closing out the 3-day event versus Loyola of New Orleans.
