AUSTIN -- State Sen. Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa on Thursday filed a bill that would allow same-sex couples to enter into civil unions and receive the same rights and benefits as married heterosexual couples.
In a news release, Sen. Hinojosa pointed out that opinions on same-sex civil unions have changed in recent years, pointing to a University of Texas poll that found 66 percent of Texas voters want some form of legal recognition for same-sex couples.
If passed, the bill would become law in 2014, but the state legislature and voters would first have to repeal a 2005 amendment to the state constitution which bans legal recognition of same-sex couples.
