SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A seller of motorized wheelchairs and mobility scooters whose commercials have become familiar television fixtures has laid off its entire workforce a little more than two weeks after federal agents raided the place.
The San Antonio Express-News reports the chief executive of The Scooter Store advised all of the New Braunfels, Texas-based company's employees that they had been furloughed. In an email late Friday, Martin Landon told his workforce of about 1,200 employees not to return on Monday unless they're advised to do so by the company human resources department.
In December, two U.S. senators questioned why The Scooter Store had received as much as $87.7 million in Medicare overpayments.
Scooter Store officials have denied wrongdoing and defended their business practices.
