CORPUS CHRISTI - Former Tuloso-Midway standouts, turned Houston Baptist stars Lauren and Kirsten Schwirtlich were named Freshman of the Year and New Comer of the Year, the league office announced on Tuesday. Lauren was named Newcomer of the Year and First-Team All Southland, while Kirsten earned Freshman of the Year and Second-Team All Southalnd Honors. A&M-Corpus Christi's Lindsey Lyles, meanwhile also named to the Southland Conference Second-Team.
"We are so proud of Lindsey being named all conference," Head Coach Stephanie Hughes said. "She has worked so hard on her swing and her hard work has paid off. It's a great honor."
Lyles, a native of Lufkin, Texas, led the Islanders in conference play with 16 RBIs and played in all 27 league games. She finished second on the team with a .288 conference batting average while recording 23 hits and four doubles. The sophomore also chipped in a triple, a home run and 32 total bases while splitting time between second base, third base and designated player.
It is the first Southland Conference honor for Lyles, who is a walk-on and finished as one of the top five hitters on the team. Lyles had arguably her best game in the second game against Lamar when she cranked her first career grand slam.
