CORPUS CHRISTI - A member of the CCISD School Board wants an investigation into this week's ant attack that left a Haas Middle School student in the hospital.
12 year old Cameron Espinosa was playing in a football game Wednesday night at Haas Middle School when he was attacked by ants. He had a severe reaction and was taken to the hospital. Espinosa is still recovering from the incident. Board member Hector Salinas wants to know if something could have been done earlier to prevent this.
"If this is in a playing field and we got that situation, then we got a problem," said Salinas.
Salinas was furious after hearing about what happened to Cameron Espinosa on the Haas Middle School football field. He says he isn't going to take any kind of excuses from the district.
"People can tell me well when it rains, the ants come out. Nah I don't wanna hear that! Nah. You know what no. This kid got bit by a lot of ants. Something went wrong," said Salinas.
He says that many ants should have never been on a school football field. Salinas says he stopped by the field and saw over 20 ant piles. Because there were so many, he believes the coaches should have known and taken care of the problem.
"If in fact the coaches there knew that there was a problem with ants before.. Then you know what? It should have been taken care of," said Salinas.
So now he says it's up to the district to answer the question he believes everyone wants an answer to.
"It really bothers me because here we got a young kid that is fighting for his life and... I don't know... Could this been prevented?" asked Salinas.
Salinas says he needs this question answered for him, and the boys family.
"I want to know. I think we... People... We owe it to everybody to know exactly, you know, why did this happen," said Salinas.
He says he will make sure the district thoroughly investigates the problem and makes sure this doesn't happen again.
