CORPUS CHRISTI - Groundbreaking for the Schlitterbahn Beach Country Resort and Waterpark on Padre Island will take place this Friday at 2 p.m. at 14353 Commodore Drive.
Last year, the Corpus Christi city council approved a $117 million incentives package for the park's developers. The plan proposed to council is a 574 acre water park with a hotel and marina.
There's no word yet if Schlitterbahn has finalized a deal to purchase the land for the resort.
Developers told council the waterpark construction would start first, followed by construction on the remainder of the resort in several phases. The waterpark is expected to open in 2014, but the rest of the work could take two decades.
Supporters of the project expect the resort to bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to the island every year. Critics, many who are residents living near the site, are concerned about the amount of traffic the resort will bring.
