CORPUS CHRISTI -- Documents filed with the city and obtained by Six News reveal Schlitterbahn water park developers want to rezone the residential area near the proposed site of the park to make it a business area.
The rezoning proposal will "allow for the golf course to remain in operation for up to three years while the development is being constructed."
Developers are proposing locating the park on what is now the Padre Isles Country Club golf course, and area which is across the street from several residential homes.
"I really don't want it [the water park] here," said Jim Abram, a nearby resident. "I wish they'd find someplace else to put it, but there's a lot of people out of work, a lot of people hurting, and so I can't in my good conscience oppose the park because it brings jobs, and people need the jobs."
Garrett Frazier also lives near the proposed site of the water park, and said it will benefit the area. "I think it's a great deal. It's just a matter of time before it happens out here on the island, so I think it's a quality development."
The city planning commission will meet to discuss the rezoning application Jan. 18.
