CORPUS CHRISTI - Ground has finally been broken for the Schlitterbahn water park on Padre Island. CEO of Schlitterbahn, Jeff Henry, said they purchased the 355 acres of land just minutes before they broke ground today.
The project was first proposed nearly two years ago and was supposed to have opened last year.
We broke the story back in April 2011 about plans to build the water park and a resort. The city approved some zoning changes in February 2012 that would allow developers to build on the site near Park Road 22. Last May the city council approved a $117 million incentives package for the developers. Then the project hit a snag when developers announced the Summer 2013 grand opening had been pushed back to March of 2014.
Now it looks like it's finally becoming a reality. In addition to finally breaking ground they also unveiled an artistic rendering of what we will be seeing come 2014.
Schlitterbahn plans on having everything including rides, rivers, slides, surfing, and even 21 cabins and tree houses. The city says in order to get their 177 million dollar incentive package they have to have the park open by 2015. But park officials say they plan on having it open earlier; March 1st of 2014.
During the construction process they plan on having the club and golf course on Padre Island open. This way residents can enjoy seeing this park become a reality.
