SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A daylong police standoff that began with the shooting of a San Antonio police officer early Monday ended after nine hours with no further bloodshed, police said.
The standoff at a Super 8 Motel just off Interstate 35 on the northern edge of downtown San Antonio ended about 5 p.m. Monday without any further injury, Police Chief William McManus said.
"This came to the conclusion we wanted it to. He came out safe and unarmed," McManus said.
McManus described the suspect as a 37-year-old man with "some history" with the police. His identity and nature of any charges were not released.
Meanwhile, the wounded officer, identified as Officer Aaron Terrazas, rested comfortably in San Antonio Military Medical Center and was expected to recover from a gunshot wound to the head.
"I wouldn't call it a graze. It's a serious wound," McManus said. However, the officer remained conscious after he was wounded, he said.
The 34-year-old eight-year veteran of the police force was wounded when someone opened fire from inside a first-floor motel room, where police had been sent after a report of a family disturbance, McManus said.
Police closed Interstate 35, among the city's most heavily traveled traffic arteries, between Interstate 37 and Interstate 10. Much of the motel was evacuated, and two nearby schools were placed on lockdowns.
