San Antonio Cops Indicted In Wreck Of City Pickup

SAN ANTONIO - A former San Antonio police officer who was found in a T-shirt and boxer shorts in front of his wrecked city-owned pickup truck has been indicted, along with a current officer, on charges of tampering with evidence.
Former Sgt. Joseph Myers is charged with tampering with evidence and misappropriation of funds. Myers, 52, was found Feb. 2 after his truck crashed into a concrete barrier on U.S. Highway 281 near downtown San Antonio. Authorities say he was causing a disturbance when found.
He later tested positive for cocaine, according to a Bexar County indictment filed Wednesday. The indictment accuses him of tampering with a drug test by disconnecting the feeder hose of a toilet and using it to dilute his urine.
The San Antonio Express-News reported Thursday that Myers has since retired.
"No one can put him behind the wheel," said Cliff Herberg, the first assistant district attorney, in explaining why Myers wasn't charged with driving under the influence. "But he has a duty to take care of the public's property under his control."
The indictment says San Antonio police audited cash under Myers' control in the narcotics unit and found more than $7,000 missing. When questioned, Myers turned in "IOUs" allegedly signed by unit detectives. Authorities say the paperwork was forged.
A current officer, Sgt. Ramiro Garcia, also is charged with tampering with evidence. The indictment accuses Garcia of removing beer cans and pornography from the crashed truck while an investigation was ongoing.
Myers did not return a phone message Thursday. Garcia did not have a phone number listed.
An internal police investigation into the incident originally involved two lieutenants, five sergeants and one patrol officer, the newspaper reported. Three officers were suspended. All have denied wrongdoing.
