CORPUS CHRISTI - Dozens of kids with cystic fibrosis hit the beach today to enjoy the summer air, and learn how to surf through an event called Surf Experience Days.
The Mauli Ola Foundation holds events like this all over the nation to show surfing as not only a fun way to spend the day, but also as a natural treatment for kids with cystic fibrosis.
Like most 13-year-old's would, Megan Whitman loves spending time at the beach and learning how to surf.
"It's awesome," said Whitman. "At first I was kind of scared and stuff, but then I got it."
Megan was born with cystic fibrosis, a life threatening genetic disease that affects the lungs and the digestive system.
"Lots of doctor visits, and lots of breathing treatments," said her mother, Karen. "But, it's a part of life, it's what we do, and she's doing really well."
Megan and her mom are one of the dozens of families that attended today's Surf Experience Day.
It's an event that isn't just fun for kids, it's actually therapeutic.
"The hospitals prescribe hyper tonic saline, which is just a fancy word for salt water," said Surf Experience director Bobby Serna. "We're bringing them out here so they can get a natural saline treatment, and have some fun in the sun."
It's an idea that's sweeping the nation, thought up by a group of surfers who wanted to find a way to make an impact on children's lives.
"They walk away breathing better," said Serna. "And with some confidence, and sleep good tonight, and eat well, and want to continue the surf journey."
