Sales Tax Numbers Make History in Alice

ALICE -- City leaders held their annual state of city address Tuesday. Leaders say the Eagle Ford Shale boom has sent money flowing into the city. The mayor says there's more good things to come.
"It's an exciting time."
That's just one way Mayor John Lemon of Alice summed up the city's progress, he says the city saw it's largest sales tax revenue in history, more than 17 million dollars. Mayor Lemon says as sales tax revenue goes up, it allows other costs to drop.
"Property rates have fallen off, I think they've been cut in the last ten years by about 50 percent, so it's good to do business here in Alice, Texas," he says.
The progress for the city doesn't stop there, Mayor Lemon also highlighted several cosmetic improvements made in the community.
"We have major quality of life improvements as everybody's known, our big project on the West side of town, we've been able to set aside approximately 12 million dollars to kick that off," Mayor Lemon said.
Mayor Lemon was discussing the multi-use complex being built. Officials say it will have an amphitheater, indoor pool, hotel and water park, a center, he says will no doubt grab people's attention.
"We're spending 12 million dollars on this and so yes as far as big sexy things to get people to look at and go "wahoo" that's the thing," Mayor Lemon said.
City officials say more infrastructure, more expansion and more quality of life projects just like the multi-use complex are to come. Over the next couple of years the city of Alice plans to put millions of dollars into expanding housing, improving parks, and fixing streets.
