CORPUS CHRISTI - Safety improvements to a dangerous curve on a southside road may take longer than expected.
As we've reported several times over the past few weeks, the lighting on Airline where it curves into Rodd Field is non-existent, and the signage isn't much better.
Back in January, Frankie Garza was killed after failing to make the curve, and rolling his car.
In early July, Phil Hartley was killed in the same manner.
Hartley's father told us a week after the crash that he couldn't believe there were no safety improvements in place yet.
"One of the things that really breaks my heart is we're talking 6 days out from the accident, and the city hasn't done anything to put up a barrier to stop it from happening again," said Robert Hartley.
Almost a month later, there are still no changes.
AEP is currently calculating the cost to bring power to the undeveloped area for street lighting, and although a city spokesperson told KRIS 6 News several weeks ago that several safety upgrades were in the works, a spokesperson said today that nothing will be done until the final crash report is ready.
Unfortunately, a report isn't finalized until it includes the toxicology results, which determine if the driver was under the influence.
At the time of the July wreck, the January toxicology results weren't even in yet, because when the driver doesn't survive and no criminal case is pending, it's a low priority at the crime lab.
Based on that timeline, the final report for the July wreck may not be ready until the end of the year or later.
