NEW YORK - For the safety tests of small SUVs, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ran 13 of them into rigid barriers where only a corner of the front gets crushed on impact missing the absorbing structure of the front and everything gets pushed inward.
Intrusion that's often deadly for occupants in what's called a small overlap front crash.
The Institute's Joe Nolan says only one of the 13 small SUVs earned its overall rating of good, the 2014 Subaru Forester.
Only one other small SUV actually passed the test, the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport received a rating of acceptable.
While the other eleven had poor ratings in at least one of the test categories, and received an overall rating of marginal like Nissan's Rogue.
A spokesman said Nissan's proud of the Rogue's safety record and its good rating in other Institute tests and will continue to review these and other results to seek opportunities for improvement.
While a Chrysler/Jeep spokesperson said the patriot meets or exceeds government requirements was still a top safety pick of the Institute and received four out of five stars from federal safety experts.
