CORPUS CHRISTI - Here's some good news for those of you who ride the bus to work: local service is about get a little bit faster.
The Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority hired a consultant to help identify ways to improve service and spent several months vetting that plan with passengers and other groups.
Starting in June, RTA will offer 15 minute service for their two busiest routes - on Ayers and Staple.
That means they'll have a bus coming by every 15 minutes.
They did it for customers like Samuel Williams, who told KRIS-6 News he pays about $20 a week to ride the bus from his northside apartment to his Southside job.
He walks to the station and sometimes waits up to an hour for his ride to arrive. And that puts him behind at work.
"15 minutes that'll help out a lot...that I can be there at work on time instead of bein' there 10...20 minutes late or 30 minutes to an hour late..that'll help me out a lot better 15 minutes, yes sir."
It costs about 75 cents on average to jump a ride on the RTA. The idea is to make the service a little more efficient and a little bit faster to get people to and from where they need to go.
RTA gives about 6 million rides a year. Spokeswoman Jane Dare Haas says they pinpointed a few roadblocks and got them out of the way.
"Transferring was delaying them.. frequent stops were delaying them getting to school and work," Dare Haas says. ' This will get them there, faster."
But some customers will have to adjust. Haas says about 40 stops will be eliminated. But they're seldom used.
And this is only the beginning. RTA has many more changes on the way.
"The service improvement that goes on the street June 2 is just phase one of a long range plan - a 20 year look out into the service that we need to be providing to this community," Dare Haas says.
She says phase two will come in 2015 and will bring faster service in Robstown.
