Rollover Claims Life of Man Headed to See Family on Mother's Day

MATHIS - One person is dead after a rollover crash near Mathis.

It happened around one o'clock Sunday afternoon along I-37 near Highway 188.

DPS troopers say 65-year-old Apolinar Garcida was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic was backed up along the highway as officers cleared the scene.

The white pickup truck Garcida drove was the only vehicle involved.

According to DPS, Garcida was on his way to meet his family for Mother's Day.

Troopers say he was headed northbound on I-37 when the truck veered off the road, across the grassy median, and began rolling all the way across the opposite side of the interstate. It finally landed upright in a ditch.

Garcida's family says he was diabetic and may may have blacked out due to low blood sugar levels.

No one else was hurt in the crash.
