FRISCO, Texas - Roger De La Cruz has been named the Southland Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week, announced by the conference Wednesday. De La Cruz earned the honor after his record-breaking performance in the high jump Saturday at the Texas Tech Red Raider Open.
"This is a great honor for him," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "That was by far the best performance we have turned in this indoor season. Roger deserves credit for coming back from some injuries and getting back on track. He is looking good."
De La Cruz clinched first place in the high jump Saturday at the Texas Tech Red Raider Open with a school-best clearance of 2.14m (7-00.25). The senior shattered his previous school record clearance of 2.09m (6-10.25) set last season at the Red Raider open.
The San Antonio, Texas native is the first Islander to claim a men's field athlete of the week award and it marks the first Southland Conference honor for the senior.
De La Cruz and the rest of the track and field teams will return to action when they compete at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 22-23 in Norman, Okla.
