CORPUS CHRISTI - With cold fronts coming in, some little critters are trying to become your new roommates.
"Just like us they don't like to be cold so they're gonna look to get in a nice warm and secure place," says Pest Fog Inc. Technical Adviser Rico Reyes. That place is normally in someone's attic.
"Attics are ideal. We have isolation they can burrow into, nest in there. So, there again, we provide the perfect place for them," said Reyes.
Because of that, any hole in your home is worth looking into. Pest control inspectors say rats, the most common pest found in homes, only need a hole the size of a quarter to get into your house.
"If it's head can fit in, it can get the rest of it's body through," said Reyes.
But even if there isn't some type of opening, rats will create one.
"I've seen them go through a brick chimney. And given enough time they can gnaw through just about any material, except for the metal they can't gnaw through," said Reyes.
So here are some tips to avoid having rats move in up stairs. Keep you home clean and don't leave food lying around. Feed your pets during the day and clean up any extra food at night. This is so those nocturnal rodents don't have food to attract them. Finally, trim your trees so rodents won't use them to get into your home.
The top rodents found in home during the winter are rats, mice, possums and squirrels.
Pest control inspectors say since there is also a drought occurring, rodents are also looking for water. So this problem will only get worse.
