ROBSTOWN -- A new Robstown elementary school hasn't even been open for a full year and already the school board voted to change its name.

The Irma V. Romero Elementary School is named after a long time Robstown teacher who died of breast cancer.

Osvaldo Romero, Former Robstown ISD Board president said , "Irma V. Romero, which was my late wife, would be the very first hispanic female to have a building named in her honor. She served this community honorably."

Irma's husband, Romero, was school board president, last year, and picked members of a committee to name the school.

He says he followed the rules and never voted in the process.

But, new school board president -- Adolfo Lopez -- says the entire board should have helped select the committee, not just Romero and Lopez says many residents agree the process was unfair.

He said, "We serve them we're elected by them and we're their voice so you have to take that into consideration."

But Romero said, "Saying that there's public outcry to rename the school, that's not the case. That's not so. It's just malice and mean spirited."

Regardless of the controversy though, Lopez says on Tuesday, the board will finalize the school's name change to Robert Driscoll Elementary.

A name, he says, the school board agreed on.

So now the school will have to change signs, t-shirts and name tags, all which will cost money.

The principal of the school, Sylvia Benavides, said, " The comments some of the parents have made to me is their concerned that tax payer money is not being spent wisely."

Lopez says the changes will cost no more than $10,000 and funding will come from money left over to build the elementary school.
